Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2004, Janis Heaphy Durham's husband, Max Besler, died of esophageal cancer at age 56. While coping with her grief, Janis soon began encountering phenomena unlike anything she had ever experienced: lights flickering, doors opening and closing, clocks stopping at 12:44, the exact time Max died. But then something startling happened that changed her life forever. A powdery handprint spontaneously appeared on her bathroom mirror on the first anniversary of Max's death. Incredibly, a similar image appeared on the second and third anniversaries as well. Clearly, something otherworldly was occurring. This launched Janis on a journey that transformed her spiritually and altered her view of reality forever. She interviewed scientists and spiritual practitioners along the way, as she discovered that the veil between this world and the next is thin, and that love is what bridges the two.

Yu Sheng was nervous as he fought against the incoming ghosts. Ten minutes later. I couldn't win, so I slipped away. " He nimbly hid behind Lu Zhiqing. Lu Tianqing raised his chin, his face closing in as he gave a long kiss, "Hide yourself well." Finally. Yu Sheng stared at the reckless ghost in front of him indifferently. He yawned and handed over the snacks in his hand. "Spicy gluten?" The walking ghost banner, with the big boss who pretended to be weak chicken, ghost during the investigation of the love.

Bert and Will, the twin sons of the baron of Ambercrest, are best friends. They do everything together and can't help it if trouble just seems to...find them. But the baron is fed up and has decided that separation will keep them out of mischief. One twin, he proclaims, will stay in Ambercrest for the summer, while the other will be sent to The Crags -- a foreboding, rocky outpost on the edge of the kingdom. It is there, hidden in a forbidden black chamber, that one of the boys discovers a bejeweled and mysterious mirror. What is the precious object? And why does it make him feel so...powerful? Soon the twins' kinship is replaced by dark magic and deceit, and a kingdom hangs dangerously in the balance. What becomes of one who is ruled by the forces of evil? And can brotherly love conquer a consuming quest for power?

Book excerpt: Alternative approaches have emerged which have radically altered our understanding of Tennyson's poetry and his relationship to the Victorian age. This text covers the most significant areas of new work on Tennyson, effectively linking feminist and gender studies with deconstructive, psychoanalytic and linguistic attention. The Introduction discusses ways in which orthodox critical approaches have dominated readings of Tennyson's poetry and provides a critical overview of the radical reappraisal of his work. It also provides a guide to the varied ways in which these new debates have shaped and are shaping themselves, with a final discussion of the future directions which Tennyson criticism is likely to take. The essays chosen cover and reflect a range of modes of critical enquiry compelling in themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume Donald Munro, author of important studies on early and contemporary China, provides a critical analysis of the doctrines of the Sung Neo-Confucian philosopher Chu Hsi (1130-1200). For nearly six centuries Confucian orthodoxy was based on Chu Hsi's commentaries on Confucian classics. These commentaries were the core of the curriculum studied by candidates for the civil service in China until 1905 and provided guidelines both for personal behavior and for official policy. Munro finds the key to the complexities of Chu Hsi's thought in his mode of discourse: the structural images of family, stream of water, mirror, body, plant, and ruler. Furthermore, he discloses the basic framework of Chu Hsi's ethics and the theory of human nature that is provided by these illustrative images. As revealed by Munro, Chu Hsi's thought is polarized between family duty and a broader altruism and between obedience to external authority and self-discovery of moral truth. To understand these tensions moves us toward clarifying the meaning of each idea in the sets. The interplay of these ideas, selectively emphasized over time by later Confucians, is a background for explaining modern Chinese thought. In it, among other things, Confucianism and Marxism-Leninism co-exist. Originally published in 1988. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dealing with the basic elements that make us human, the short stories contained in Inside from the Outside represent explorations of various aspects of human nature in all its complexity and variety. Author Peter Baltensperger has incorporated elements of experimental, surrealistic, and bizarre short fiction. The stories, classified as sudden fiction, are all less than a thousand words long and focus on the many archetypal characteristics which constitute the human psyche. In "From the Secrets of Tree," Sybil Strong attempts to discover the secrets of the forest during a horseback ride and swim in the river. Mitchell Collier, in "Amid the Variegated Currents," battles the river for answers as he calls attention to Sisyphus of the River. In "Across the Lake," Morgana Cronin uses a swim in a clear lake on a hot afternoon to solve life's puzzles. This collection exemplifies the never-ending search for meaning and the primordial quest for selfhood as the characters struggle to find themselves in a confusing world. Praise for Inside from the Outside "Because the dreamscape of Peter Baltensperger's prose is precisely where Jung meets Freud, the spare, direct, and deeply affective stories in this volume represent the specific way that the archetypal heritage can surface far more profoundly in the sensual persona than in the curious intellect or the emotive heart. These are stories about the human condition ... and about the commonality of the human experience shared by all. Like Conrad, Nabokov, and Appelfeld, Baltensperger writes in a learned language. But that only makes his writing the more remarkable: this is English-language short prose at its most arresting ...and at its most seductive." —Martin S. Cohen, essayist, novelist, commentator, and editor
