Jafar was the third son of Abu Talib ibn Abdul Muttalib and Fatima bint Asad, hence a cousin of Muhammad. When there was a drought in Mecca, Abu Talib could not afford to support his family. His brother Abbas therefore took charge of the young Jafar. Jafar was an early convert to Islam. He married Asma bint Umays, who converted to Islam in 614-615. When the Muslims were harassed in Mecca, several of them migrated to Abyssinia. Jafar joined the second flight in 616. There they obtained the protection of the Negus, Ashama ibn Abjar, and could worship God unhindered. Jafar and Asma lived in Abyssinia for about twelve years.

The Quran states that Moses was sent by God (Arabic: الله Allāh) to the Pharaoh of Egypt and the Israelites for guidance and warning. Moses is mentioned more in the Quran than any other individual, and his life is narrated and recounted more than that of any other prophet. Prophet Harun or Aaron is also mentioned in the Quran as a prophet of God. The Quran praises Aaron repeatedly, calling him a "believing servant" as well as one who was "guided" and one of the "victors". Aaron is important in Islam for his role in the events of the Exodus, in which, according to the Quran and Muslim tradition, he preached with his brother Moses to the Pharaoh of the Exodus.
